Behind the Loom
The making process at Loom & Yarn
Welcome to our process videos.
This is where we share behind-the-scenes glimpses of life at the loom — from preparing yarn and setting up the warp to weaving cloth and finishing each piece by hand. These short films show how our scarves and table runners are made, revealing the slow rhythms, materials, and techniques that shape every textile. It’s a window into small-batch making, where time, care, and craft are as important as the finished cloth.
Working with Fibre
Our process often begins with loose fibre. Natural fibres are blended by hand on a blending board to explore colour, texture and movement before spinning. This stage allows subtle variations to emerge — layers of tone, softness and character that later influence the finished cloth.

Spinning Yarn
Our process continues at the wheel, where blended fibres are gently drawn and twisted into yarn by hand. Spinning brings structure and rhythm, allowing colour, softness and strength to come together in a continuous thread. Subtle variations emerge naturally — fine changes in weight, tone and movement that give each yarn its own character and guide how it will later be woven.

Weaving the Cloth
Weaving brings everything together. As the shuttle passes through the warp, pattern, texture and colour begin to reveal themselves. Each piece grows gradually, shaped by hand and guided by the materials themselves.
